Meditations on The Luminous Mysteries The Mysteries of Light

Before we begin with our meditation on the Mysteries of Light, and in this installment, The Baptism of Our Lord Jesus, let us just take a moment to reflect on our Holy Father’s reasoning behind his request for a new set of Mysteries, the Mysteries of Light. In his letter to the Faithful on October 16, 2002, which was the beginning of the twenty fifth year of his pontificate, he stated “...to bring out fully the Christological depth of the Rosary it would be suitable to make an addition to the traditional pattern which....could broaden it to include the Mysteries of Christ’s public ministry between His Baptism and His Passion.

“...It is during the years of His public ministry that the Mystery of Christ is most evidently a Mystery of light: While I am in the world, I am the light of the world” (Jn 9:5).

“Consequently, for the Rosary to become more fully ‘a compendium of the Gospel’, it is fitting to add, following reflection on the Incarnation and the hidden life of Christ (the Joyful Mysteries) and before focusing on the sufferings of His Passion (the Sorrowful Mysteries) and the triumph of his Resurrection (the Glorious Mysteries), a meditation on certain particularly significant moments in His public ministry (the Mysteries of Light).” All of the above was taken from Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, dated 16 October 2002.

Now, although we have allocated Thursday as the day for praying the Mysteries of Light, for those who pray the fifteen or now, twenty decades of the Rosary each day, you might want to change the configuration of your praying to accommodate what makes a lot of sense by our Holy Father. It is very fitting that we reflect on the public life of Jesus after His early years, but before His Passion. It actually follows the timeline of His life, death and resurrection. Just a thought, but it could be a powerful tool in your reflections on the Rosary.
