Saint Leopold Mandic
Saint of Reconciliation
Saint Leopold, although a multi-faceted Saint who could be Patron Saint of many areas of our life, is best known for that part of his vocation as a Priest, to which he most dedicated his life, the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We believe that the Lord is resurfacing these little known Saints in the United States, at the threshold of the new millennium, to serve as Role Models to priests in particular, but to all of us in general.
This is simply the story of a Priest! At a time in our Church where we are sometimes discouraged from going to confession and are told that a general confession once a year is sufficient, when children are made to receive First Holy Communion before receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, when sin is down-played to such a degree, as with Pilate, we hear “What is sin?” when sin has been replaced by such catch words as dysfunctional, neuroses, and we are told “You’re all right; I’m all right,” along with varied terms of psychosis, it is time to learn about a Priest who devoted his entire life to bring about peace and reconciliation between man and God!
As with Jesus, Father Leopold knew man could not be whole unless his sins were forgiven. He knew and dedicated his life to fulfilling this mandate from Jesus to him and all priests, to heal through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
We travel to where he began in Herzegovina, to Venice and the Cathedral where he was ordained, to Padua. We visit his confessional, where he spent more than 16 hours a day. Only the confessional and a statue of Our Lady survived a bombing. We visit the museum, his tomb and more.
